Wisconsin Sleep About Us
Wisconsin Sleep

The Wisconsin Sleep program opened in October 2007 through the collaborative efforts of the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation, Inc. (UWMF), and Meriter Hospital, Inc. (Meriter). This innovative program combines the strength of experienced faculty physicians of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and the latest technology to create a truly comprehensive range of patient services.

The Wisconsin Sleep program is led by medical director Ruth Benca, MD, PhD. It includes a clinic and a laboratory:

  • Clinic: The Wisconsin Sleep clinic offers patients the opportunity to meet with physicians, or other non-physician providers, who specialize in sleep medicine. Clinic appointments may discuss sleep problems, review test results or recommend treatment. The clinic is run by UW Medical Foundation, which supports the primary and specialty clinical activities of the faculty physicians of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
  • Laboratory: The Wisconsin Sleep, Inc. laboratory is an independent diagnostic testing facility operated as a joint venture of UW Medical Foundation and Meriter. The laboratory provides a range of sleep testing through 16 private sleep study suites.

Appointments

If you are experiencing sleep difficulties, talk to your personal physician. Depending on your symptoms, he or she might refer you for a consultation at the Wisconsin Sleep clinic or for a test at the Wisconsin Sleep, Inc. laboratory.

Once we have received your physician’s referral, we will send you a sleep questionnaire to learn more about your specific sleep problems. Our schedulers will contact you within three business days of receiving your completed questionnaire to set up your appointment. Clinic appointments will often last about an hour; sleep studies are scheduled either overnight or for an 8-10 hour period during the day.

If you need to cancel or change your appointment with a Wisconsin Sleep physician or for a sleep study, please call (608) 232-3333 as soon as possible. We ask for at least three days notice to cancel a sleep study appointment.

Billing and Insurance

The providers at Wisconsin Sleep are participating providers for Unity, Physicians Plus, GHC, Anthem/BCBS, Alliance, HealthEOS and others.

We strongly recommend, however, that you contact your health plan to ensure your Wisconsin Sleep services are covered and to determine if you have any referral/authorization requirements.

Depending on the type of services you receive from Wisconsin Sleep, you may receive separate bills for your clinical consultation or your sleep study. If you have questions about Wisconsin Sleep billing, please call (608) 829-5217.
